Tegra 2 – First Benchmark (Updated)

I’m running a suite of tests that I’ll report on soon but just look at this. Tegra 2 wipes out every other smartphone platform out there.

This is a screenshot from Quadrant. I’m also seeing great browsing results, a SunSpider result of 9300 and Pi being calculated in 2081ms which is 3x faster than the average score on the BenchmarkPi application. It can handle a 1080p H.264 file at 13mbps and plays Raging Thunder 2 on the 1024×600 screen like a demon! For a smart platform, Tegra2 is taking it to the next level.

Note: These CPU tests may only be single-threaded (Single CPU) tests.

Update: ARM were on the line. Apparently they’re sending over some benchmarks with Android 2.2. (2.2 has all the Cortex enhancements in it, 2.1 doesnt so expect a lot more from this platform.)

    given that 2.1 on tegra2 seems to knock the socks off nexus one with 2.2, i really do wonder what kind of performance we will see with 2.2 on tegra2.

    Tegra Sucks in graphics…..In all the 3d benchmarks I tried…Tegra2 failed miserably….SGX540 and Android 205 rock!

    Galaxy is also only 2.1, compared to N1 2.1 it is significantly higher. so when the Galaxy goes to 2.2 it looks like it will be able to compete with Tegra2 at 2.1. of course when Tegra2 goes 2.2, watch out!

    i wonder what power consumption is like with Tegra2? i’m just not sure why NVidia is flopping so hard in the mobile segment with ION & Tegra2, nobody is using their stuff! i realize everybody hates them as a company, but in business its about money & personal feelings should be put aside.

    With Ion, its Intel putting the foot down with licensing. Iirc, Atom is sold as a package deal in its cpu+chipset form. And with new SoC Atom, Nvidia have to do a memory hijack via their Optimus solution.

    When it comes to Tegra, they are a late-comer to the market. Samsung make their own SoC, as well as there being TI, Qualcomm, Freescale and others. And of those, Tegra may well be one of the more expensive variants.

    Yeah, I would like to see the Hummingbird in the Samsung Galaxy Tab pitted against a comparable Tegra2 tablet both running Android Froyo of course.

    There is something that no one is observing…
    nVidia Tegra 2 is based on ARM Cortex A9 while the rest of the smart phones on ARM Cortex A8 by default 0.8GHz( Hummingbird by Samsung, Apple’s A4 are just another implementation- (1 GHz variant) of cortex A8). And in performance easily A9 is above A8.

    Humming bird could easily be beaten by nVidia even without their graphics core addition in their SOC.

    Of course its on 2.1 (and I suspect single threading) so its OK. Not stunning tho.

    A nexus one on 2.1 was scoring 6-7 MFLOPS so that’s a pretty healthy 60% increase. Since nexus one got about a 6x increase moving to the JIT expecting 50-60 MFLOPS from tegra 2 wouldn’t be unreasonable. That puts it in range of PIII/athlon scores for java linpack at a fraction of the power.

    I’m certain you’re right about the single threading; java linpack the android application is based on is single threaded. I would expected a much better score from both cores.

    The performance advantage of 2.2 is mostly in the JIT. There are patches available now that patches 2.1 with JIT as released by Samsung for their CPUs. So if nVidia has used this patch (as is common place now), I wouldn’t expect an amazing improvement on 2.2.

    No, it’s with Android 2.1, Cortex-A8 overclocked to 1.2GHz, with i/o customization. Quadrant is basically useless.

    Nexus one on Froyo here. With it overclocked to 1113, and using SetCPU to set min CPU at 1113, I get
    Linpack 36
    Quadrant 1650 (got 1777 once)
    Sunspider 5.64

    I have a Galaxy S i9000 and after installing LagfixV2.1+ I got a Quadrant score of over 2200. CPU is completely stock, and running Eclair 2.1.

    There is another website that actually compares the specs of the different mobile GPU’s and it shows the SGX540 as being much more powerful than Tegra2. AMD’s Adreno 205 is more comparable to Tegra2

    also remember that the SGX540 is just an updated 535, which has been on the market for years. Tegra drivers have a long way to go.

    And remember that Samsung uses an optimised JIT on their 2.1 which gives a massive advantage over other 2.1s but should be leveled out at 2.2 where the optimisation becomes stock standard.
