Due to a broken SD card reader on my laptop, we weren’t able to photos of Intel’s Medfield-based Honeycomb tablet out immediately. Now, USB SD adapter in hand, you can see the goods:
It’s important to remember that this is just a reference design. Intel calls it Red Ridge and its predecessor is an older reference design called Green Ridge which is Oaktrail-based (also running Honeycomb on x86). These devices are made by Intel and sent to ODM’s to let them see what kind of hardware is possible with the given platform.
I spoke with a few Intel folks and the general impression seems to be that we should begin seeing ODM versions of Medfield Honeycomb devices sometime around CES (January). It remains to be seen exactly how such devices will compare to their ARM contemporaries, but we’re hoping that competition will mean improved platforms on both ends.
