I’ve had the Asus Fonepad for just over 2 days and in that time I’ve been through the OS, the built-in ASUS applications, downloaded my usual suite of Android apps, I’ve run a few performance reports and even written a blog post with it. I’ve tested video playback and found limitations and issues. It’s clear [...]

Nicole Scott of Mobilegeeks.com also has an Asus Fonepad so we got together in a live Google Hangout this morning to discuss it. We talk about the features, make a lot of comparisons to the Nexus 7 and give you an idea of who this tablet is designed for, what it’s key features are and [...]

The Asus Fonepad arrived this morning and the unboxing video is already up. Apart from a casing that wasn’t properly seated, everything seems to be working well and it confirms that the Asus Fonepad is excellent value. I’ll be doing comparisons with my 2+ year old Galaxy Tab to see how far the tablet space [...]

I was at the ASUS press conference today as part of my trip to MWC and managed to catch the launch of the ASUS Fonepad. It’s a 7-inch Jelly-Bean Android tab running on an Intel Z4240. It’s got phone functionality. It costs 229 Euro Who said Intel tablets were expensive? Video below. Android Jelly Bean, [...]

Opinion – The most likely scenario for tomorrow’s Motorola / Intel announcement is a Wi-Fi only CloverTrail tablet with dual-core 1.8Ghz and Jelly Bean. There was a private meeting at IDF 2012 about CloverTrail at IDF and I wasn’t invited; Which is fine by me because there’s enough information being given at IDF to know, [...]

At a Intel press event, still going on as I write, Intel has just announced that Z2580 that we tipped earlier today. It’s a dual-core version of the current Intel smartphone platform which is capable of running Android x86 and other x86 software. …the Atom™ Z2580 processor that doubles the performance of the Atom processor [...]

The Padfone has developed somewhat since we saw the magic at Computex 2011. We’re now looking at the docking station (with 18Wh battery) and a cool little Bluetooth pen that acts as a headset.

Qualcomm gave us an update on Mirasol this morning. If you remember, Mirasol is a daylight-readable (transflective) display technology with color. The screen refresh rate and colour depth isn’t that good for video and photo experiences but for reading, it’s getting better every time I see it. Power-saving, daylight readable and now with touch and [...]

If there’s one place glasses-free 3D might work while it requires relatively direct-on viewing angles, it’s tablets. This 1080p demo from Qualcomm and Master Image 3D is a great example of it working well. Of course you won’t see it in this video but the effect was good. There were a few angles where the [...]

We had time to get some more hands-on with the Intel Smartphone reference design here at MWC this morning. It feels powerful! Apart from an Intel-optimised build of Opera, Gameloft have also been porting over to the Intel platform. It’s worth noting that applications that don’t use any NDK, will run on the Intel Android [...]

6Ghz of Krait CPU in one platform! We just had a demo, the first, of Qualcomm’s next generation Snapdragon platform, the APQ 8064 which contains four Krait Cores running up to 1.5Ghz. There’s a new graphics module coming too and that’s based around an Adreno 320.

Very quickly before we go to the next meeting I want to relay some reliable information I’ve had this morning about Intel’s next generation phone and tablet platform. Clover Trail (and CloverTrail +) is likely to be launched today. The platform is Dual Core (that’s likely to be 2×1.6Ghz for Win 8 and Android Tablets) [...]

I’m heading to Barcelona today to attend Mobile World Congress where I expect to be bombarded with phone, smartphone, tablet, app, operating systems and telecom news but this year I’m going with a specific focus. I’ll be looking for more evidence of crossover from the traditional mobile world – platforms, operating systems and software – [...]

Good news for Acer A500 owners today and a relief to those that are worried about the ‘Android Update Alliance.’ There will be an ICS update coming soon. There were already a few pointers that it would happen but nothing I could have put any trust in. This message from ACER USA, makes it clear. [...]

When I tested an Intel Menlow-based MID in July 2008 and saw the PC architecture streaming music into a browser-player running at 2.8W I knew Intel were on the right track. Two years later with their next-gen architecture, Moorestown, they tackled the standby power drain and managed to get it into a phone. I had [...]
