Ultimate Coder Ultrabook Challenge Week 5 – IDF Inspiration

There’s nothing better for software innovation than getting a bunch of software innovators together, adding some hardware experts, some visionaries, a bunch of cool hardware, feedback from consumers… and a few glasses of alcohol. That about sums up what happened at IDF last week. Without reading any of the Ultimate Coder Ultimate Challenge blogs this week (see more below though) I know that all of the teams were stimulated to make changes, add features and optimize others. It’s late in the game (only 2 weeks to go) but I’m sure that there will be a few beta’s that get feature upgrades. Dangerous!

Ultimate Coder Ultrabook Challenge Week 4 – “Feature-Freeze” on the Horizon

It’s week 4 of the Ultimate Coder Ultrabook Challenge competition where 6 teams are competing for $10K. We’re meeting all of the coders and other judges next week so if you have specific questions, leave them below and I’ll put them to the coding teams. Meanwhile, read about touch UI design, NFC breakthroughs and Windows 8 app monetization.

You can track latest posts from all competitors and all judges here.

New Firmware for Nokia N8 Rolling Out

2012-08-27 17.50.44It’s downloading and installing as I write this. The new firmware for the Nokia N8 (and others) not only includes a new browser but also ‘new imaging apps.’

This update again brings new features to Symbian smartphones, for example:
– a new browser with HTML5 web apps support, a new set of homescreen widgets, and the previously released Microsoft Office Mobile App and Nokia Maps Suite 2.0 in one package.
– Nokia N8 will have some extra apps for imaging

I’ll let you know what I find and do some tests on the HTML5-capable browser.

Via The Nokia Blog

Update:

The initial firmware update on my vanilla UK Nokia N8 completed without any problems via an OTA transfer in about 10 minutes.

AAS have some details on the changelog. Included are some new clocks, previously installable apps now being part of the firmware (Big Screen, DLNA play, Maps Suite 3.9, QT 4.8.0) and a facelift for the music player.

There’s a new search widget available in the software update list.

Still no social networks apart from Facebook and Twitter. (What about Flickr, YouTube and the million other networks Nokia?)

HTML5 Browser allows pages to be saved as apps (although I might have missed that before – I’ve never been a big user of the browser.)

A set of new widgets are useful.

I can’t find evidence of new imaging apps but maybe they are rolling out as separate apps at a later stage.

Ultimate Coder Ultrabook Challenge Week 2 – Moving through UI design

The coding teams competing for $10000 have just completed week 2 of the Ultimate Coder Ultrabook Challenge and have all posted their updates. I’ve also received my developer preview Ultrabook with touch and sensors! Read my thoughts about the competition at this stage and view the video below.

What’s On Your Ultrabook?

apps

There are very few things an Ultrabook can’t do. Gaming, video editing, CAD, office work and photo editing to name just a few. Yes, there are some limits within all categories but the Ultrabook is the only type of laptop that gives you access to all these capabilities while still being small and lightweight. Its dynamic range is unlike any other PC.

I thought it would be a good idea for readers with an Ultrabook to tell the rest of us what software is on their Ultrabooks and how it is used. I’ll start by outlining the software I use for my multimedia blogging and web-site management. Note that the Ultrabook is also used as my desktop PC.

Ultimate Coder Ultrabook Challenge Week 1 – Developers Kick-Off with Hardware and Software Ideas

Static Web banner_300x250All 6 teams have now revealed what software they will be working on over the next 6 weeks for the Ultimate Coder Ultrabook Challenge and the chance to win $10,000. We’ll be following their progress which we hope includes methodology, tips and demonstrations. During September we’ll be meeting the developers and later in September we’ll be judging all entries on a next generation touch and sensor enabled Ultrabook.

The Coders already have the Ultrabooks so we’ve also got our first chance to take a closer look at the hardware.

You can see a summary of what’s happening in the Ultimate Coder Ultrabook Challenge at any time by visiting this Intel portal.

The Intel Ultimate Coder Ultrabook Challenge is here!

6 teams of developers have been recruited to do something special, with a very special Ultrabook. The Intel Ultimate Coder Ultrabook Challenge has just kicked off and I’m extremely happy to say that I’m one of the judges who has to test all the software on a next-generation touch-enabled Ultrabook.

Over the next 6 weeks myself and three other experts will be watching closely and reporting on the progress of the 6 coding participants/teams; Lee, John, George & Suresh, Sagar, Shailesh and Andreas. One of them is going to win a bunch of cash but whatever happens, we’re going to get some good insights into the process and the type of software that is possible on a touch-enabled Ultrabook.
